is KVAR (not reverse power) relay necessary to protect from
excitor field failure on a brushless, synchroneus generator?
Some people with previos experince tell me no but the
manufacturers tell me it is designed for that purpose.
Is it that it is only necessary for brushless generators
and not the older style with the slip rings and brushes?

Field failure makes synch gen run as induction gen drawing
large lagging KVAR from system and hence KVAR relay will
act.In older gen, there was no such relay. If the field
breaker tripped the whole unit tripped on master trip.If the
FB did not trip, the unit cb tripped on over current.

a)In a 3-phase 4-wire circuit, a circuit breaker is selected to protect the circuit whose highest fault level is 6.6 MVA. Determine the required minimum breaking capacity in kA. (Note: Covert 3-phase power in terms of kA to find answer.) b)Using the below, determine the required minimum making capacity in kA as a “peak value”. Rate breaking capacity (Icn) ka: Icn<= 1.5 Factor = 1.41 1.5

For these 2 devices what their power ratings are ? 1) single phase : AC 220V & starting amps 3Amps (i.e. starting torque) and the stabilized amps 2A ... For deep freezer 2) single phase : AC 220V & starting amps 2.7Amps (i.e. including the starting torque of a CRT monitor) and the stabilized amps 1 Amps thanks
