How to calculate the cable size for particular load..

Answer / guest

The most important criteria for the calculation of cable
size is the
a)load amps b)Voltage drop due to distance, c)The amp
rating of the breaker that is going to be connected. d)type
of cable d)how and where the cable is going to placed.
With a known particular load say 250 amps you may also
already know the distance and the type of cable you are
going to use say xlpe single core or 3core in trunking or
under ground.
From the cable table under the correct appropriate amp
rating the cable size is selected. The voltage drop can be
calculated now, If necessary the cable size is increased to
meet the requirement.Than finally the amp rating of the sub
cct breaker is determined. This breaker should be able to
protect the cable and allow for the use of the particular
load.

I have a drawing of a wound rotor induction motor for a crane. This crane motor has 5 forward speeds & 5 reverse speed implemented of course with different amount of resistance for each speed setting selected. What has got me scratching around is the fact that 8 of the 10 speed selections switch in uneven (unbalanced) amounts of resistances on each of the 3 connections to the motor's rotor. Can this be possible? I would have assumed this would produce unbalanced rotor currents and therefore vibration in the motor. I would greatly appreciate anyone's comments on this. Many thanks, Confused.
