What is mean by INRUSH CURRENT?

Answer / kalirajan.n
Inrush current or input surge current refers to the maximum,
instantaneous input current drawn by an electrical device
when first turned on. For example, incandescent light bulbs
have high inrush currents until their filaments warm up and
their resistance increases. Alternating current electric
motors and transformers may draw several times their normal
full-load current when first energized, for a few cycles of
the input waveform. Power converters also feature high
inrush currents relative to their steady state currents

inruse current always occurs in inductive coil like
transformer, reactor during charging . it happens due to
non availability of back e.m.f. . inrush current is
praporsanal to V -E/R+X .

When a transformer is first energized a transient current
much larger than the rated transformer current can flow for
several cycles. This is caused because the transformer will
always have some residual flux density and when the
transformer is reenergized the incoming flux will add to
the already existing flux which will cause the transformer
to move into saturation.

Inrush current is the current drawn by the load at the time
of switching. It depends upon starting impedence of the
load as some load have changing impedence depending upon -
temp., fr. etc.

Answer / chandan
inrush current means the starting current of a transformer or a motor.During starting, the inductive equipment draws huge current from its source. There is 2nd,3rd,4th and so on harmonics frequency currents are present with the fundamental frequency during the charging of the equipment.Specially ,2nd harmonic currents are predominantly present during the starting or charging of the equipment.
