What is the difference between phase current & line
current, how both can be measured in star and delta system

Answer / prasad
Star or Delta are types of winding connections for 3 phase
systems. The line current is the current passing thru
conductor to these windings. The ammeter is generally used
to measure current thru those conductors & not winding.
This current is known as line current. While the current
passing thru each phase of winding is known as phase
current.
In Star winding entire line current passes thru
individual phase i.e. I(ph)=I(L)
In Delta winding however line current gets divided in two
windings. Here I(ph)=I(L)/1.732. Here 1.732 is square root
of 3.

The phase current is current flow between phase to neutral
is called phase current and the line current is current
flow between two phases is called line current.

delta system occured line current will equal 1.732*phase
current

Answer / kupstar tange
Line current is the current that is flowing from an AC supply and Phase current is the current that is flowing through each phase in the system.
In a star system the line current is equal to the phase current (IL = IP)
in a delta system, the line current is divided by 1.732 to get the phase current ( IP = IL/1.732)

In a 3-phase system current accross any one phase and
neutral is called phase current whereas current accross any
two phases is called phase current.In star connection phase
currrent = line current wheras in delta connection line
current = 1.732 phase current.

in 3 phase system star and delta connection r used
according 2 requirement.now,phase current is d current
between any phase,line current is d current betwen one
phase and neutral line. in y-y connection line
current=phase current,in delta connections line
current=1.732 times of phase current.

Answer / deepak ranu sharma
IN STAR CONNECTIONS THERE IS A NEUTRAL POINT SO PHASE
CURRENT IS 1.732 TIMES OF LINE CURRENT AND LINE CURRENT IS
THAT CURRENT WHICH IS PASSING THROUGH A LOAD THROUGH PHASE
AND NEUTRAL.
IN DELTA CONNECTIONS THERE IS NO NEUTRAL SO THE LINE
CURRENT IS SAME AS PHASE CURRENT.
Is This Answer Correct ? | 6 Yes | 56 No |
Answer / deepak ranu sharma
IN THE SYSTEM OF 3 PHASE STAR CONNECTIONS THERE IS A
NEUTRAL POINT SO THE PHASE CURRENT IS 1.732 TIMES MORE THAN
LINE CURRENT.AND IN DELTA CONNECTIONS LINE CURRENT IS EQUAL
TO PHASE CURRENT.

We use ungrounded DC system (220V/110V) for control and protection system in substations etc. Suppose we have long 2 core DC cables running from our DCDB in control room to the load (length of around 2 to 3 km). Do we need to protect these long DC cables from earth leakages or not? If yes how?
