Answer / muhammad

Columns dont have only axial forces they can get lateral or bending forces as well, in that case reinforcement is required to resist tensile and bending effects.

Answer / rajeshkerai

It is true that a column is a compression member but it has to be designed in such a way to withstand the imposed load.

If you want the column to carry the imposed load without any reinforcement, then it will have to be of a much larger size than you see the columns around. This will create a reduction in the floor area.
therefore the reinforcements are used to minimize the size of the column in order to get the maximum space around.

In case of bi-axial and uni-axial column there is bending moment so to resist the bending stress tensile reinforcement . There after in case of axially loaded column minimum reinforcement is provide where it is not necessary , as per is code because..as per cl 26.5.3.1 of is 456 .8% and as per same cl point b. In any column that has larger cross sectional area than that required to support the load the percentage of steel based upon area if concrete required To resist the direct stress and not upon the actual area

Column is a compression member, concrete is strong in compression..then what is the reason to the co..

Answer / hasnain abbas

In column generally two types of reinforcement are provided i.e. Longitudinal Reinforcement and Transverse reinforcement (lateral ties or Stirrups)

Purpose of Longitudinal Reinforcement is to
1) Assist Concrete in resisting compression (here by using reinforcement we are able to reduce the size of column)
2) To resist tension which may arise due to eccentric loading or transverse load or moment.

Purpose of Transverse Reinforcement is to
1) Hold Longitudinal Reinforcement in place
2) to arrest the cracks

Column is a compression member, concrete is strong in compression..then what is the reason to the co..

Answer / karan agrawal

Column is a compression member is correct but if we will not provide reinforcement the size of column would be very much larger. This will affect the aesthetic appearance and the room size.
Concrete is good in compression and Steel is good in tension is our common terminology but this dosen't mean that steel is poor in compression. Actually steel is good in both tension and compression and its purpose in providing in column is to reduce the size of column and bear the lateral forces

Column is a compression member, concrete is strong in compression..then what is the reason to the co..

Answer / webster

Non reinforced columns are has high compresive strenght and low tensional strenght. hence the reinforcement increases the tensional strenght of the column to witstand tensional forces, such as tursion. etc
