Generator is machine which converts mechanical power in to electrical power.it gives output either dc or ac .alternator is a genetator but givs only ac power.

Both Generator and alternator is grow power or energy but ac generator called is alternator.Nothing more then difference

The diff is that generator has stationory megnetic field and rotating conductor while alternator has rotating megnetic field and staionory armature.
