Water Hammering in case of turbines may be explainedas:
Turbines are operated at four levels 1.) 1/4 throttle 2).
1/2 throttle 3.) 3/4 throttle 4.) full throttle.
when the valve opening opening in the turbine is suddenly
closed the water coming in from the penstock makes an
impact on the shutter which is closing the gateway. as a
result of this a back pressure is set up in the pipeline.
The phenomenon of water impacting on the valve shutte in
known as Water hammer.
All suggesstions welcome I am not sure about steam but
common sense says that in steam pipeline the phenomenon be
the same only that fluid be replaced with steam

in the water flow air will cause for hammering because of
dencity difference of liquid and air. both will have
different velocity the water hit the pipe wall and
hammering is happening. in the steam line also the same
phenomina happening. and one more is if the pipe line is
cool then the steam contrased when come contact with cool
pipe. it also cause for hammering.
there should not be any different dencity fluid while flow.
