To make easy path to current while any short circuit
occured between phase to metal body of the equipment.
Note : The resistance is iversely propositional to the
cross section of the conductor.

At the time fault multiple time of the fault current is
generated so to give a proper path to the earth the pin
size is bigger in comparision to the other two

Answer / mechsatheesh
in larger size metal body have low resistance.it will allow
the leakage current faster to ground when compared to phase
current to draw inside.

becz it designed in such a way that line never be shorted
to earth terminal by mistake no one can insert the plug
with out any other combination ...otherwise the neutral
point may be inserted to line which may cause serious
accident..

Answer / praveen kotha
We know that the resistance is inversely proportional to area of cross section.so if area increases resistance decreases,so the leakage current will take low resistance path.that is why earth pin is thicker.
It is longer because the first to make connection and last to disconnect should be earth pin, this will assure safety for the person who uses the electrical instrument.

Answer / akem gilbert
The reason is simply to ensure that the ground connection is the first to make when plug is inserted and the last to be broken when the plug is removed.

You can insert the top in one way only ,so that the phase
and neutral wires are not interchanged and also because the
earth fault current could be higher than the load current

some times the variation in supply voltage the load takes
high current to overcome this problem the earth terminal is
placed
