BCD (Binary-Coded Decimal) is a positional number system that represents decimal numbers using binary digits. Each decimal digit from 0 to 9 corresponds to a unique 4-bit binary value: 0000, 0001, 0010, 0011, 0100, 0101, 0110, 0111, 1000, and 1001. The advantages of BCD include ease of conversion between decimal and binary systems and simplified arithmetic operations for decimal numbers. However, it requires more bits to represent decimal numbers than binary equivalent values. An excess-3 code is an unweighted code because each digit weight (8, 4, 2, 1) does not change across different digits, making it simpler in design but less efficient in terms of bit usage compared to other weighted codes like BCD with excess-1 or excess-8.
