Interferons are a group of signaling proteins that are produced by cells in response to viral infection or stress. They have a broad antiviral effect, acting by preventing the replication of viruses and enhancing immune cell function. There are three main types of interferons: type I (IFN-α and IFN-β), type II (IFN-γ) and type III (IFN-λ).
