In Exchange Server 2013, there are five main roles: Mailbox Server role (responsible for user mailboxes and public folders), Client Access Server role (provides access to users via Outlook, OWA, ActiveSync, and other protocols), Hub Transport Server role (routes and delivers email messages), Unified Messaging Server role (integrates voice mail with Exchange mailboxes), and Edge Transport Server role (acts as a gateway between the internal Exchange organization and the Internet).
