Sufism is a mystical form of Islam that emphasizes personal spiritual development through direct experience of God. Major beliefs and practices include: (1) Tawhid, the belief in the oneness of God; (2) Fana, the annihilation of the self in God; (3) Baqa, the abiding presence of the self in God after annihilation; (4) Murshid-Murid relationship, a master-disciple relationship between Sufi teacher and student; (5) Dhikr, the repetition of God's names as a form of meditation; (6) Sama, the listening to music or poetry as a means of reaching spiritual ecstasy.
