What were the problems in the Anglo-Chinese relationship in the nineteenth century? In what way did ..

Answer / Dilip Kumar Baskey

The Anglo-Chinese relationship during the 19th century was marked by growing tensions due to British imperial ambitions and Chinese resistance. The opium trade played a significant role in escalating these tensions.nnOpium, grown primarily in India under British control, was imported into China and became highly addictive among the population. Despite repeated attempts by the Chinese government to ban opium, the British refused to comply due to its economic benefits. The trade created a huge imbalance of trade, as China had large opium deficits with Britain.nnIn 1839, Lin Zexu, a Chinese official, confiscated opium stored in Canton (now Guangzhou). In response, the British sent a naval force to defend their interests. The resulting Opium War (1840-1842) ended with the Treaty of Nanking, which granted Britain additional trading rights and territories in China, further exacerbating tensions.
