u can run S.M. at any power factor u want by changing the excitation.

synchronous moter run at all power factor as unity leading and lagging by chnging the excitation as
under excitation it is operates as lagging
over excitation it is operates as leading
at normal excitation it is operates as lag but reached to unity
at critical excitation it is operates as unity pf
