@ Aprameya Shyam
length=x does not imply breadth=36-x
2x+4y=36.
3 possible answers are
(2,8) -> 16sqcm.
(4,7) -> 28sqcm.
(6,6) -> 36sqcm

Answer / sharif m
length of the book = x
width of a book = y
4x + 2y = 36
(one wrap covers both side length of the book same in width
also - so two wrap covers 4x as well as in 2y)
4(6)+ 2(6)=36
4(7)+2(4) =36
4(8)+2(2)=36
are the possible roots.... second shud be the answer
because that parameters are ideal for a book.

length of the thread is 36. length wise twice breath wise
once thn totally thrice. so 36/3=12. so length is 12*2=24
breath is 12. area=length * breath=24*12=288sq.cm

length=x does not imply breadth=36-x
given that thread cover length is twice and breadth once
once a book covered by length means twice the length is covered
so if twice length is covered then 4*length is covered
likewise consider breadth
4x+2y=36.
so u can give some random values to x and y
some possible set for x and y are
(8,2),(7,4),(6,6)
(6,6) -> 36sqcm

Answer / aprameya shyam
let length=x... then breadth=(36-x)
since thread is used lengthwise twice & brdthwise once v
can write 4x + 2(36 - x) = 36 cm
bcoz there are 2 lengths n two 2 in a 4 sided figure(dis is
obvious)
solving v get x=-18 (ignore the -ve sign)
hence l = 36-18 = 18 & b = 18
so area=l*b = 18 * 18 = 324sqcm

Q2) Paul the octopus who has been forecasting the outcome of FIFA world cup matches with tremendous accuracy has now been invited to predict ICC world cup matches in 2011. We will assume that the world cup contenders have been divided into 2 groups of 9 teams each. Each team in a group plays the other teams in the group. The top two teams from each group enter the semi finals ( after which the winner is decided by knockout). However, Paul has a soft spot for India and when India plays any team, Paul always backs India. Alas, his predictions on matches involving India are right only 2 out of 3 times. In order to qualify for the semi finals, it is sufficient for India to win 7 of its group matches. What is the probability that India will win the ICC world cup
