Cryptococcosis is a disease caused by the yeast-like
fungus, Cryptococcosis neoformans.

symptoms are meningitis but may also infect the lungs,
kidneys, prostate and bone. Themain symptoms are fever,
tiredness and headache. Most infections develop slowly with
symptoms usually presentfor two to four weeks prior to
diagnosis.


Transmission: It is thought that the infection is spread by
inhalation of the organism. The disease is not transmitted
directly fromperson to person.The time from exposure to the
organism and the development of disease is not known. lung
disease may precede brain infection by months or years.


Treatment: Antifungal agents are required to treat the
disease. All cases require treatment, which is generally
continued for anextended period. In people with HIV/AIDS
and people with weakened immune systems, cryptococcal
infection israrely cured and requires ongoing treatment to
control the disease.
