The neutral wire carries the unbalanced current.
Under normal conditions Ia+Ib+Ic=0 hence no current in the
neutral. Generally fault currents are unbalanced in nature
and is conducted by the neutral.

neutral is nothing but a retun path.it carries the
unbalanced current during faulty condition. in normal
condition it carries 0 current.

The most important use of the neutral however, is that it
allows a 240V access from a 415V transformer. without a
neutral you would not be able to have 240V. This is
achieved by connecting the load between line to neutral.
Lini to line volts remain 415. In many underground minning
applications neutrals are not used because they have a NER
to limit the earth fault current. Haing a neutral these
applications could short the neutral and eliminate the
benifit of having a NER. What is a NER ? It is a nutral
earthing resistor normally connected at the star point to
gnd on the secondry of the transformer and it limits the
earth fault.
