Definitely Buchholz relay is used for protection of oil
transformer. when any internal short circuit (between
conductors) is occur then huge current is flow and heat is
produce as a result oil try to go quickly from oil tank to

Buchholz relay is used in specially oil cooled transformer
to prevent any fault short circuit when short circuit
occurs in the transformer tank temperature of the oil
increases and become vapour then vapour evaporates and
enter the buchholz relay which is installed between the
Transformer core and conservator tank. After entering the
relay it tilts the upper float valve of the relay which
give alarm & if continuously temp increase then the relay
operates and give command to Panel tripping relay & trip
the VCB/SF6 .Thus it prevents from transformer.
