as far as I know big engines starts with external motors
which is called self motor and they are operated with
batterys and once the engine is started the battery is
charged with alternater driven by the same engine connected
with belt

in heavy vehicles like cars the flywheel is first rotated
with help of external aid like motors due to which the
piston gains momentum and the engine start operating on the

vehicle , gear remains disengaged that's why vehicle is not
moving forward.

i am very much confused about direction of thrust in steam turbine...we have steam turbine of 13 stages,10 stages of impulse and 3 of reaction type....in study manual direction of thrust is towards inlet but on thrust bearing its loading side is towards condenser(exhaust side) wile also dummy ring is present in design which also restrict rotor to move in exhaust side direction not inlet ....
