Why transformer rating in KVA?
and Generator also?
Answers were Sorted based on User's Feedback
Answer / chvnraja
Any device is rated depending on losses of the machine. In a
transformer the losses are iron losses which depends on
voltage and copper losses which depends on current so there
are no losses which depend on power factor hence transformer
is rated in KVA

In a transformer Losses(I^2R-Iron and Copper Losses)depends
on voltage(Volts) and current(Amps).so the rating wshould
be in KVA

Answer / a.muthukumar, vacon
Cu loss of a transformer depends on current and iron loss on voltage. Hence, total transformer loss depends on volt-ampere (VA) and not on phase angle between voltage and current. It is independent of load power factor. That is why rating of transformer is in KVA and not in KW.

but nobody did not say about alternator

Answer / deepak
this is because the KVA rating give active plus reactive
power components and the reactive power is associated with
losses of the machines. KW rating tells about the power
being transfered not the losses associated with the process.
