how to calculate the current capacity of a wire if its
dimension in Square mm is given
Answer / iamdon
The material of wire and the physical dimnsions are known.
1)From the physical property its resistivity(p)and melting
point can be found out(we need to depend upon techanical
specifications).
2)Resistance(R)of the wire can be calculated using the
relationship with the help of dimensional data
R=(p*l)/A where l=length of wire
A=cross sectional area of wire.
3)For a particular value of current(I)flowing through the
wire,the heat produced can be found by Joules law of
heating as
H=I*I*R.
4)Now we need to look into the ambient temperature in which
the wire is intended to work.After applying Newtons law of
cooling between allowable temperature of wire(considering
some factor of safety) and ambient temperature.We can find
current carrying capacity of wire.
