if you are having other options in your hand, then never
commit mistake of joining as inspector, central excise.
promotional avenues attached with the post are meagre and
whole career may be ended up with one promotion, if you are
a general category candidate. Unlike the CBDT, the Central
Board of Excise & Customs is one of the most worst body to
take care of its employees, partiuculalry
inspector/superintendent.

if u r GEN then u will br promoted to superintndent(a
gazetted post)after around 17 to 18 years and if SC/ST after
10 to 12 years. However if at all it not possible than u will
be placed in that scale with GP 4800 after 12 years of
service.Promotion wise worst service.

do not come to this dept. as Inspector, as u will join as
inspector, you will get acp, but not promotion after 12
years, & if you are not SC/ST, then will probably retire as
inspector, if some luck shines on u, u may become
superintendent at the fag end of your carear-shekhar

This is a very prestigious job.. you will be appointed as a 3 star inspector right from the beginning of your career.. Only draw back is you will get very late promotions.. i.e if you are a GM candidate then you will be promoted as a superintendent i.e group B gazzetted after 12 to 18 years .. And if you are a SC/ST candidate then it will take 8 to 15 years.. If luck shines then you would become assistant commissioner of central excise at the time of your retirement i.e a group A post..

dont come as inspector of central excise or customs.it is
meant for only SC/ST's. They will be appointed with me as
LDC,then became UDC,then became TA,then became STA, then
they became Inspector, then Superintendent. After 17 years
still I am Inspector. They got almost 5 promotions. Myself
did not get one.Long LIve the foresight of Mr.Ambedkar and
Mr.Neharu and Mr.Gandhi.

THE PROMOTIONAL ASPECT IS NOT SO GOOD YAAR. MY FATHER JOINED AS AN INSPECTOR OF CENTRAL EXCISE. HE IS NOW SUPERINTENDENT IN HIS AGE OF 54. NOW WHEN HE WILL RETIRE HE WILL BE ASST. COMMISSIONER. BUT IF HE HAD BEEN IN CBDT HE MIGHT BE RETIRED AS A ADDL COMMISSIONER/ JOINT COMMISSIONER. FOR YOUR INFORMATION I AM A TA IN CBDT. AND IT IS DEFINITE THAT I WILL RETIRED AS AN ASST COMMISSIONER/ DY COMMISSIONER. SO HERE IS THE DIFFERENCE.

Inspector will remain as inspector atleast for a period of
18 years. Your works will vary according postings. If you
are a head quarter inspector, your works will be limited to
saluting. But it is the most comfortable post. No
responsibility, No work if you do not run after postings.
Forget the promotions. At least you will become a
superintendent with more work, more responsibilities, More
scoldings. It is a better job. Join here.

as far as i am know, anyone in there right mind should not opt for this post..though the salary is not bad, promotion wise it's not the job any careerist aspirant would want.. for a general candidate the chance of getting to AC is almost nil..and remember it is only the initial post a normal IRS would have.. if you got this job by clearing CGL of SSC, then make another attempt and this time prefer CBDT... you will get to the post of AC n 13-15 years.. and if you re sc/st then it will be in 10-12years...if you want career, this is not the place for you...
