the cell membrane, also known as plasma membrane has tiny
pores which allow the entry and exit of some selected
substances like water, food material, etc.

the cell membrane is a lipid bilayer with a number of proteins spanning the membrane. these proteins form different channels and pores which allow selective passage of molecules through them, eg. ionic channels help in transport of ions. and non polar, lipid soluble molecules can cross the lipid bilayer easily. thus the cell membrane allows selective passage of substances through it.
