What are liverworts?..

Answer / anithaisro

Liverworts are small nonvascular plants, usually of moist
shady places. They produce spores, not seeds and lack true
roots, stems and leaves.

Liverworts are of about 8,000 species. They got their name
because some look like the human liver. Wort is an old name
for plant. They don't have a whole lot of uses. Sometimes
they are weeds. Some animals eat them and they may assist
in soil formation.

What are liverworts?..

Answer / rexar

. Liverwort is a flowerless, spore-producing plant - with the spores produced in small capsules. Any of more than 8,000 species of small, nonvascular, spore-producing land plants constituting part of the division Bryophyta. They include the thallose liverworts that show branching, ribbon like gametophytes and the leafy liverworts (mainly in the order Jungermanniales). The six orders of liverworts are segregated primarily on gametophyte structures, with sporophyte features also supporting the classification. One additional order formerly classified as liverworts (Takakiales) is now placed among the mosses. It is estimated that there are 6000 to 8000 species of liverworts, though when Neotropical regions are better studied this number may approach 10,000. Some of the more familiar species grow as a flattened leafless thallus, but most species are leafy with a form very much like a flattened moss. Leafy species can be distinguished from the apparently similar mosses on the basis of a number of features, including their single-celled rhizoids. Leafy liverworts also differ from most (but not all) mosses in that their leaves never have a costa (present in many mosses) and may bear marginal cilia (very rare in mosses). Liverworts are typically small, usually from 2–20 mm wide with individual plants less than 10 cm long, and are therefore often overlooked. However, certain species may cover large patches of ground, rocks, trees or any other reasonably firm substrate on which they occur. They are distributed globally in almost every available habitat, most often in humid locations although there are desert and arctic species as well. Some species can be a nuisance in shady green-houses or a weed in gardens.
