Temporary hardness can be removed by boiling the water. During boiling, calcium bicarbonate and magnesium bicarbonate decompose, forming a white precipitate of calcium carbonate (CaCO?) and magnesium carbonate (MgCO?), which can be filtered out. The result is softened water.
