Hydrogen was discovered by Henry Cavendish. Free or
elementary hydrogen is present in air only in traces.
Hydrogen is present in the atmosphere of sum
Properties of Hydrogen
(1) It is colourless odourless, less soluble in H20 than Oxygen
(2) It is lightest gas known
(3) It is neutral towards litmus
(4) It is an reducing agent
Atomic Hydrogen:-It is extremely unstable and it quickly
recombines to give molecular hydrogen
If we subject ordinary hydrogen to very high temperature
such as that of an electric and, then we get atomic
hydrogen. It can also be obtained by passing ordinary
hydrogen at a low pressure through discharge tube
Active Hydrogen:-When ordinary hydrogen at room temperature
is subjected to the action of silent electric discharges at
an electrical pressure more that 30,000 colts, it changes
into an active variety of hydrogen
Nascent Hydrogen:-If hydrogen gas is bubbled through
acidified potassium permanganate, the colour is not
discharged. If rise and potassium permanganate is decolourised
Hydrogen produced in second case is more active is known as
Nascent Hydrogen
Occluded Hydrogen:-Some metals can absorb relatively large
volumes of hydrogen under certain conditions and this gas is
given off when the metal is heated especially under reduced
pressure. This phenomenon is known as Occlusion and gas
absorbed by metal is known as Occluded Hydrogen.
