Explain about the evolution of American Democracy?
Answer / Hemwati Nandan
The evolution of American Democracy can be traced back to its colonial roots in the 17th century. The early colonies were ruled by proprietors, governors, and assemblies, which laid the foundation for representative government. However, it was the Declaration of Independence in 1776 that marked a significant turning point. This document declared that all men are created equal and have certain unalienable rights, including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The US Constitution, drafted in 1787 and ratified in 1789, established a federal system of government with three branches – legislative, executive, and judicial – to check and balance each other's power. The Bill of Rights, added to the Constitution in 1791, protected individual liberties. The Civil War (1861-1865) resulted in the abolition of slavery, and the subsequent Reconstruction era focused on ensuring equal rights for African Americans. The Progressive Era at the turn of the 20th century saw reforms in areas such as labor laws, women's suffrage, and antitrust regulations. The New Deal of the 1930s, during the Great Depression, introduced extensive government intervention in the economy to combat unemployment and poverty. The modern era has seen a shift towards conservatism and neoliberal economic policies, as well as ongoing debates about issues such as civil rights, immigration, and foreign policy.
