Comment on the land revenue system under Akbar with special reference to the Zabti system of assessment.
Answer / Ravindra Kumar Ram
Akbar (r. 1556–1605) implemented significant reforms in the Mughal land revenue system, aiming to increase efficiency and reduce corruption. One of his most notable reforms was the implementation of the Zabti system of assessment, which standardized the measurement of land and established a fixed rate of revenue collection based on crop yield. This system replaced the earlier system of revenue collection based on the discretion of local officials, reducing arbitrariness and increasing predictability. Akbar also introduced the Mahalwari system, which divided the country into units called mahals (estates) for administrative and revenue purposes. These reforms aimed to increase revenue collection and solidify Mughal control over their territories.
