Why we use TMS in NMR spectroscopy?..

Answer / bharat kumar mishra raipur ka

In nmr spectrum we usually take TMS our intarnal refernce because TMS has the following character which proves it to be most suitable one
1-it is volatile liquid having b.p.=26.5°C is inert to most of the reagents and is soluble in most of the organic solvent
2-when a very small amount is added to the sample it gives an intense sharp signal aven at low cone
3-all the hydrogen in TMS are equivalent and furter more silicon is more electropositive compound to carbon and tends to donate electron density to methyl group thier by increasing thier shielding
4-since its b.p. is low it can be easily removed from sample are pure compound can be recoverd

Why we use TMS in NMR spectroscopy?..

Answer / mehdi hatefi

TMS Stands for TetraMethylSilane.Si(CH3)4

Owing to the electronegativity difference between Silicon
and Carbon, electron density on carbon is greater than silicon and hydrogen atoms of methyl group are greatly shielded and compared to most of organic compounds, hydrogen atoms of TMS resonate at a higher frequncy that by definition sigma value for TMS is zero

why tetramethyle silane is used as a standard in NMR spectroscopy?
Ans: Tetramethylsilane (abbreviated as TMS) is the organosilicon compound with the formula Si(CH3)4. It is the simplest tetraorganosilane. Tetramethylsilane is the accepted internal standard for calibrating chemical shift for 1H, 13C and 29Si NMR spectroscopy in organic solvents (where TMS is soluble) Because all twelve hydrogen atoms in a tetramethylsilane molecule are equivalent, its 1H NMR spectrum consists of a singlet. The chemical shift of this singlet is assigned as 0 (delta) δ or tau ( ʈ ) , and all other chemical shifts are determined relative to it.
