Explain the mechanism of antibacterial action?
Answer / Abhishek Ranjan
Antibacterial agents work by targeting essential bacterial processes that are different from those of human cells. Antibiotics can be divided into several classes based on their mechanism of action. For example, beta-lactams inhibit cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins; aminoglycosides interfere with protein synthesis by binding to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome; quinolones inhibit DNA gyrase, an enzyme involved in DNA replication; and macrolides target the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome.
