What are some of the different ways in which information
could be encoded in spike trains?
Answer / Om Shiv Shukla
Spike trains, or action potentials, can encode various types of information in neurons. One way is rate coding, where the firing rate of a neuron encodes the intensity or amplitude of a stimulus. Another way is temporal coding, where the timing and pattern of spikes carry specific meanings, such as in the phase-locking phenomenon observed in some populations. Additionally, spike trains can also encode spatial information through the selectivity of neurons to specific locations or features within the sensory field. Lastly, spike trains can encode statistical properties of the input through stochastic spiking models.
