One example is photoreceptors found in the eye. They are located in the retina and respond to light. The mechanism of amplification happens through a cascade of chemical reactions that result in the generation of electrical signals, called action potentials. Another example is mechanoreceptors found in the inner ear, which respond to sound and movement. The hair cells within these receptors contain stereocilia, which bend when exposed to mechanical stimuli, triggering a similar cascade of chemical reactions that generate action potentials.
