A system of chemical reactions can be represented by ordinary differential equations (ODEs) when the reaction rates depend on the concentrations of reactants at a single point in space. This is known as a lumped system. If the spatial distribution of reactants matters, partial differential equations (PDEs) are used to account for variations in concentration throughout the volume. PDEs describe how the concentration changes over time and space.
