Application Server is server which acts as interface between
between end user and Database server . And also it is having
the several components in it. Central Instance is the
instance accessing for the Database Server through listener.
And Central Instance is one of the part of the Application
Server.

central instance is a collection of several work process
such as (dwp+ewp+bwp+swp) which is connected through
dispatcher along with message server to interact with sap
user.
and application server is nothing but the collections of
central instances plus other individual instances which is
used to communicate with database system of SAP and
retreving data for the SAP users.
