What is Hydrophytes ?..

Answer / guest

The plants that grown in water of in very wet places are
known to be hydrophytes. These hydrophytes may be floating
or amphibious, totally or partially submerged.

These hydrophytes have adapted themselves differently. The
characteristic fenture of these hydrophytes is this that
these have very little protective tissue. Supporting tissue
is also absent. Conducting tissue is not well developed.
Root hair are absent. There is large gaps or aerencyma
present in hydrophytes which help on aeration of internal
tissues.

Root system in these hydrophytes is feebly developed.
Bladder wort, a floating plant is rootless. In water lettuce
cluster of fibrous roots are present but with root caps

Stem of hydrophytes may be large or small ,branched or
unbranched. Stem and branches are soft having large number
of aircavities filled with gases. Mechanical and vascular
tissue is not well developed. The epidermis is meant only
for absorption not for protection so it has no cuticle

Leaves of submerged plants are thin, ribbon shaped. Stomata
and cuticles are absent .Epidermis is meant for absorption
but is also contains some chloroplasts to absorb little
light for photosynthesis. Leaves of floating plants are well
developed having thick cuticle an large no. of stomata on
the upper surface. Absorption of water takes place through
low surface and exchange of gases through upper surface

Amphibious plants have different kinds of leaves on same plant
