How to increse bearing capacity in soils (Stabilisation of
soils)

Answer

The following techniques can be used for improving bearing capacity of soil as per the site condition.

Increasing depth of foundation
Draining the soil
Compacting the soil
Confining the soil
Replacing the poor soil
Using grouting material
----Stabilizing the soil with chemicals-This method of improving bearing capacity of soil is costly and applied in exceptional cases. In this method, chemical solutions, like silicates of soda and calcium chloride is injected with pressure into the soil. These chemical along with the soil particles form a gel like structure and develop a compact mass.This is called chemical stabilization of soil and used to give additional strength to soft soils at deeper depths.

Question { 15803 }

why either no or minimum shear reinforcement is provided in
case of slabs?

Answer

According to IS:456, shear strength of element will increase if depth is less than 300mm. this will increase with decrease in depth.
as most of slab have depth less than 150mm which give enough shear strength most of times.

Question { 20117 }

why 1.25 factor is to be multiplied to cylindrical strength
of concrete while getting the equvalent cubical strength of
concrete?

Answer

due to less height there is an overlapping in end friction in cubes. the end friction effect is up to 0.8*base dimension for each face which gives 0.6*L overlapping
but cylinder have double height than base dimension which will eventually stops from end friction overlapping.

Question { 8223 }

what is general scouring?

Answer

Scouring can be defined as a process due to which the particles of the soil or rock around the periphery of the abutment or pier of the highway bridge spanning over a water body, gets eroded and removed over a certain depth called scour depth. Scouring usually occurs when the velocity of the flowing water increases or crosses the limiting value that the soil particles can easily handle.

Question { 7240 }

what is scour depth $ what's the process to determine it?

Answer

Scouring can be defined as a process due to which the particles of the soil or rock around the periphery of the abutment or pier of the highway bridge spanning over a water body, gets eroded and removed over a certain depth called scour depth.
Hydraulic Engineering Circular (HEC) has published a manual in which the methods are mentioned some of which are empirical equations or graphs to estimate the scour depth based on the discharge, flow velocity or flow depth etc.
