I have worked in a hotel so I think I can give a better answer. Mainly hotels and motels differs in three terms:
1. Hotels are situated amid a city or near to tourist places, but motels are at highways or outskirts of villages/cities.
2. Hotels are large in size and while motels are small with a number of rooms in a line or L shape with a car parking space in front of each room.
3. Hotels provide services more than just living, like food restaurant, etc. But Motels are for travelers to just spend night during their journey.
