What is nanotechnology?..

Answer / rajnish jindal

Nanotechnology is developing rapidly and is an area of
special interest among researchers and academicians. As a
result it has great possibility for producing improvements
and innovations in many areas of life by providing better
way of living. Nanotechnology presents the cutting edge of a
new technology that will find usage in medicine, space
exploration, communications, manufacturing, and almost every
other aspect of modern society. Tools and techniques used in
this technology projects towards placing every atom and
molecule in a desired place. On this basis molecular
machinery is created thereby resulting in manufacturing
revolution. The word “Nanotechnology” was originated from a
Greek world which means "dwarf " i.e one billionth of a meter.

Nanotechnology is a catch-all phrase for materials and
devices that operate at the nanoscale. In the metric system
of measurement, “Nano” equals a billionth and therefore a
nanometer is one-billionth of a meter. References to nano
materials, nanoelectronics, nano devices and nanopowders
simply mean the material or activity can be measured in
nanometers. To appreciate the size, a human red blood cell
is over 2,000 nm long, virtually outside the nanoscale
range. A strand of human hair is roughly 75,000 nm and at
least 10 hydrogen atoms lined end to end makes one nano
meter. That means we are dealing with things that includes
anything smaller than 100 nano meter with novel properties.
Understanding this technology means learning
small….very–very small which is absolutely different from a
world that was uptill now based on thinking big.
Nanotechnology is not only making things that are smaller,
faster or stronger but also making something completely new
and with better properties, or making machines that will
lead to new manufacturing paradigms.

Nanoscience and nanotechnology are an extension of the field
of materials science. Physics, mechanical engineering,
bioengineering, and chemical engineering departments are
leading breakthroughs in nanotechnology. The related term
nanotechnology is used to describe the interdisciplinary
fields of science devoted to the study of nanoscale
phenomena employed in nanotechnology. The study of nanoscale
systems promises to lead to fundamentally new advances in
science and engineering and in our understanding of
biological, environmental, and planetary systems. It will
redirect our scientific approach toward more generic and
interdisciplinary research. Nanoscience is at the unexplored
frontiers of science and engineering, and it offers one of
the most exciting opportunities for innovation in technology.
