It is the outer most single layer which is made up of
barrel shaped cells. They may be arranged in uniseriate or
multi serriate(e.g ficus).Generally they are
uniserriate. They are compactely arranged having certain
pores called as stomata(sing.stoma)
There are certain structures also present in this region
like.:
in most of the plants it is covered by cuticle layer to
prevent the water loss.
stomata which are associated with transpiration,
trichomes which are hair like outgrowths, wax
diposition ,scales.
In most of the leaves like e.g.angiosperms, there are two
types of epidermis
upper epidermis(adaxial epidermis) and lower epidermis
(abaxial epidermis)
shapes of the epidermal cells:
1)bulliform cell/motor cells:it helps in rolling during
drought condition.
2)papillae:absorption of maximum light.
3)calcium carbonate deposition:e.g. ficus leaf
4)some cells also show lignification e.g. monocotyladons
5)Thin walled eidermal cells also having cellulose
deposition.
