1. Sit with client and discuss the same.
2. Use prototype methdology during preparation of system.
3. U can also see the existing application and pepare the
test case (in most of the cases this approach is very
useful)
4. u can also see similar type of application and prepare
testplan and Test Cases.
5. U can even use the existing Test plan and Test Case of
Existing application which is similar to this new Project.

Guy,
But its not that easy to interact with customer if its
project based company, moreover you need to sit with your
customer with your BA and TM because BA's are the expert to
get the requirements, as per the standards while fetching
requirements from Client a Tester has to sit with the
client, but in real time as a tester he cant understand how
exactly he can gather the requirements,
First based on FRS , you can write System Fucntional Test
cases. but you can write Test Plan, but if you want to
write Non functional, Integration testcases then go for
Exploratory testing.

As u told client gave you a functional spec.. then u have
to explore it (appling exploratory testing and error
guessing technique)and make test plan or test cases.This is
the only answer of your query.

if there is prototype then the functional specks are enough
for preparing test plan and test cases as presently i worked
on similar project.
check the prototype understand the working of the prototype
and prepare the test plan according to the functional specs.
if only given functional spec then there is no chance to
prepare the test plan and test cases and execution as these
are related to each other. if first thing is not prop[er
then later things almost imposible

Hi,
I think the previous 2 ans. are good.But, frnd u gotta
know ur client is not wrong and he does not expect u to
test the application also. He just wants u to test the
business logic and for the technical doc. (whatever u have)
is good enough. Being a tester u should know that this form
of testing is known as Explainatory Testing. To help u a
bit more, read ur doc a bit more carefully try and
find 'If /Else' conditions and just make your test cases.
At the end of the day u should check u have covered each
and every line and statement of your doc.

You need to set an meeting with client again and discuss
the application senarios and what functionalites he wants
to see in his application. (Go for Agile methodology)
