There are two candles of equal lengths and of different
thickness. The thicker one lasts of six hours. The thinner
2 hours less than the thicker one. Ramesh lights the two
candles at the same time. When he went to bed he saw the
thicker one is twice the length of the thinner one. How
long ago did Ramesh light the two candles .

Let the initial height of the candles be equal to 1 unit. If the candles have burned for x hours for the first candle to be half the height of the second candle, we can write
(x/4)=((4-x)/4)
(x/6)=((6-x)/6)
Height of the first candle left = (1/2)Height of the second candle
((4-x)/4)=((6-x)/6)
x=1 hr
so ramesh light the candles before=total length of thin candle-remaining length of thin candle)=4-1=3hr

let L be the length of candles and t be the time(hrs) he
litted the candles.
after t hrs the propotions of loss is same...
so..
for thicker 6-t/4-t =(L-x/2)/(L-x/4)
then u get t as 2Hrs

let x be time at witch RAMESH lighted the candles
since thicker one last for 6hrs &thinner for 2hrs lesser
than thicker
so,

x=6/2
=>x=3hrs

Alok and Bhanu play the following min-max game. Given the expression N=40+X+Y-Z, where X, Y and Z are variables representing single digits (0 to 9), Alok would like to maximize N while Bhanu would like to minimize it. Towards this end, Alok chooses a single digit number and Bhanu substitutes this for a variable of her choice (X, Y or Z). Alok then chooses the next value and Bhanu, the variable to substitute the value. Finally Alok proposes the value for the remaining variable. Assuming both play to their optimal strategies, the value of N at the end of the game would be
