Acid-fast staining was introduced by the German scientist, Dr. Julius Albert Friedrich Christian Kossel (1853–1927) and his assistant, Robert Koch's assistant, Dr. Ziehl, in 1882. However, its popularity grew significantly after Dr. Gerhard Armauer Emil Hansen developed the improved Ziehl-Neelsen staining method in 1884.
