A man? body is always at work-whether awake or asleep. When
a man is walking, eating, talking, riving a car, we say he
is at work since hit activity is clearly visible. But even
when he is asleep he is working for, although he may be at
perfect rest, many parts of his body are working. His heart
is throbbing, the blood is circulating, the process of
digestion is going on. It is a common scientific principle
that energy is consumed whenever any action takes place. So
also for man?s activity energy is required.
This energy is provided to man through
the food he takes.
Thus food is the source of energy for a man, in the same way
as the fuel is the source of energy for a steam engine. The
food provioes fuel for the human engine. It is changed so
that it can dissolve in the blood and a very slow process of
burning takes place in the human body. The energy that is
thus released helps the human body to perform functions and
the heat keeps the body warm. Thus the need for food which
was not supplied. Thus the main functions of the food can be
summarized as follows :-
(1) It supplies the energy for doing work and keeping the
body warm.
(2) It makes good the wear and tear of every day life.
(3) It provides necessary substances for the growth of the
body.
