What are the Conditions for growing slow-growing mycobacteria?
Answer / Vineet Kumar Verma
Slow-growing mycobacteria require specific conditions to grow. They typically grow best at 37°C but can also grow at 28°C or lower temperatures. A rich medium like Middlebrook 7H9 broth is commonly used, supplemented with albumin, dextrose, and catalase. Mycobacteria also require longer incubation times (4-10 weeks) compared to fast-growing bacteria. To reduce contamination, antibiotics such as streptomycin or cycloheximide are often added.
