* Total World Population , 2008-- 6707 millions
Prediction of world population end of 2009- 6890 Millions
* US population in 2008-- 392 millions
Prediction of US population end of 2009- 399 millions

Calculation:
US population = 5.7% of Worlds Population
Total Cars in US = 42.75 millions Approximate
So, I would say, anywhere between 40 - 45 Million cars at
the end of 2009.
If you can find accurate numbers, you could get very close.
