intersection defined as n
A U B = 144
A + B - (A n B)= (A U B)
0.8x +0.7x -144 = x
1.5x - 144 = x
1.5x - x =144
0.5x = 144
x = 288

So, total strength is 288

Forget the 80% and the 70%. It is there to confuse you.

10% of class did not pass any test. 144 students passed both tests.
There for 90% must = 144 students. 10% + 90% = 100%.
Therefore 10% + 144 = 100%. So 144 = 90%. or 100% = 144/0.90 = 160
