when an open defect is reveiwd and it is a valid defect but
if it has aleady been reported by another tester then it is
given the status Duplicate.we go ahead and close that
defect because its a duplicate defect which has already
been reported and it will be fixed by the concerned team.
closing the duplicate defect does not mean that it is left
unfixed.

The duplicate bug should be validated with the original one. If the contents of the bug reported later(duplicate bug)is same as the previous one. Then the duplicate bug should be rejected & the respective tester have to cancel the defect as the error has already reported in Defect management tool(e.g. Quality Center).

There are two possibilities in case of duplicate bugs.
1) Original defect(first one to be logged) was
opened/closed in an earlier release/cycle.
2) Original defect was opened/closed in the same(current)
release/cycle where the duplicate defect was opened.
In Scenario 1, based on your project standards, you could
reopen the original defect and update the release/cycle
fields to reflect the recent release/cycle where the defect
was detected. Close the duplicate defect and associate it
with the original defect. Also state the original defect id
in the comments.
In Scenario 2, reopen the original defect.Close the
duplicate defect and associate it with the original defect.
Mention detailed notes stating release/cycle name where the
defect passed retest and was closed. Also mention the
release/cycle name where it was detected again/reopened.
{on a side note, duplicate defects are sometimes helpful in
identifying collateral damages done to the code during
various stages of development}
