What are the difference between IPv4 & IPv6?? Can anyone explain more details about it..!!..

Answer / shahin

Hi... there is lots of difference in IPv4 & IPv6...let me
try to explain...

some of them are..

a. IPv4 is a 32 bit addressing scheme in a TCP/IP network
where as IPv6 is a 128 bits address.

b. Address available in IPv4 is near about 4.3 billion
(including private, public & reserve) where as in IPv6 its
2^128.... (Calculate it... i don't hv guts....heheheh)

c. Complicated header in IPv4 where as IPv6 has most
simplied header (Extension field in header is optional in
IPv6 & Also some one fields are removed).

d. In Ipv4, IPSec & AH (Authentication Header)is add ons
(Not present default), where as in IPv6 IPSec & AH is
present default.

e. IN IPv4, there in no inbuilt QoS, but in IPv6, its inbuilt.

f. Stateless auto configuration is not supported by IPv4,
where as IPv6 support it. (New fatured introduced in IPv6).

g. In IPv4 network, packet fragmentation is done by router
or layer 3 device... where as in IPv6 network, packet
fragmentation is done by source node. so it reduce the
router overhead.

h. In IPv4, ip addressing styles are unicast, multicast &
broadcast, where as in IPv6 instaed of braodcast, its
introduce a new style its known as ANYCAST. (Same address
for group of devices, but packet wud be sent to nearest
device). So in IPv6 we can hv n number of server of the same
address.

i. In IPv4, ARP is used to track IP to MAC, where as in
IPv6, NDP (Neighbor Discovery protocol) is used for this
purpose.

Hey guys, Watever i know i just wrote it here... may be i m
wrong in some concept, let me know...... coz i m still
reading abt IPv6 & i think i hv to read more abt it...!!!
Coz after all we gonna use it very soon.

hi shain i ma sufring from flu(Now swine).ok as balachandar
say that this is a interview type answer for nterview this
is best if you want to leran it detail then i am trying here

ipv4-we use that from last decade.

it is 32 bit value that X.X.X.X=8.4=32
now question is that why we need ipv6

the rate by which computer organization develop there is a
possibility that there is shortage of ip address

the alternate sol is subnating but it will save us only next
10 t0 20 yr
again it become shortage of ip addressing
as you know that for communication along wan and
/internet/intranet all value are not common

so now we are thinking about ipv6.

ipv6 is a 128 bit having value of 0-9 and 10-a --- 16=f

how to write it

XX:XX:XX:XX

now plz doant ask how to subnated it.because i donot know.if
you know then you can post here.

this schema of ip addressing is in developing mode and not
be acceptable for wide range of application

Answer / vipin kumar

The Main difference between the IPV4 and IPV6 are...

1. The IPv4 is a 32 Bit address
The IPv6 is a 128 Bit IP address
2. The IPV4 has the 4 Octat of 8 bit each
The IPV6 has the 8 octat of 16 bit Each
3. The IPV4 uses the Decimal No. for user friendly display
The IPV6 uses the Hexadecimal No. for User friendly
Dispaly.
4 The IPv4 is defined in classes.
The IPv6 is not derived in classes yet now.

Answer / bharti shukla

ipv6 devide in sections
ipv6 depends upon neighbor discovery, autoconfiguration, multicastlistener discovery and path MTU discovery
there will be the fewer ipv6 addresses than the theoritical maximum is that each 64 bit no will include the mac addrs of the host while incorporating the h/w addrs cuts down the available nos.it makes it more efficient and useful.
there are three section
-global routing prefix
-subnet id(organise site)
-interface id(mac address)

1. IPv4 is 32 bits IP address
2. IPv4 can support up to 232 addresses
3. In Ipv4, IPSec & AH (Authentication Header)is add

4. In IPv4, there is no inbuilt QoS,
5. In IPv4 network, packet fragmentation is done by

7. In IPv4, ARP is used to track IP to MAC.

1. IPv6 is 128 bits
2. IPv6 support up to 2128 addresses to fulfill future
needs with better security and network related features
3. In IPv6 IPSec & AH is present by default.
4. QoS in IPv6, its inbuilt.
5. In IPv6 network, packet fragmentation is done by
source node. so it reduce the router overhead.
6. In IPv6 instead of broadcast, its introduce a new
style its known as ANYCAST. (Same address for group of

Answer / pramod chaulagain

1. An IPv6 address consists of 128 bits, while an IPv4
address consists of only 32.

2. IPv6 has a lot more usable addresses compared to IPv4.

3. IPv6 makes the router’s task more simpler compared to IPv4.

4. IPv6 is better suited to mobile networks than IPv4.

5. IPv6 addresses are represented in a hexadecimal,
colon-separated notation, while IPv4 address use the
dot-decimal notation.

6. IPv6 allows for bigger payloads than what is allowed in IPv4.

7. IPv6 is used by less than 1% of the networks, while IPv4
is still in use by the remaining 99%.
