When you look at a Cisco switch like Cisco 2950, why are
the ports labeled with an 'X' behind the number? Like 1x,
2x.....23x, 24x, and what does it mean when there is no 'X'?
Answer / Sanjay Pratap Sahu
On a Cisco switch like the 2950, the ports labeled with an 'X' behind the number are Fast Ethernet (FE) ports that can be configured as either copper or fiber connections. The presence of the 'X' indicates that the port supports both types of cables:
1x - Copper cable only
2xSFP - Fiber SFP module (Small Form-factor Pluggable) slot for fiber connection
FXS - Fiber connector directly on the port
When there is no 'X' behind the number, it means that the port only supports copper cables and does not have an option for fiber connections.
