till date i e as on 09/07/2008 the total nimber of railway
zones in India are 17. the new on e is konkan railways, and
the head quater is Navi Mumbai

officially, IR has 17 zones including the Kashmir Valley railway and the Konkan Railway is not yet considered as part of IR due to the conversations of its high debt.
